Chess Fundamentals

Chess is played on an 8×8 grid with alternating light and dark squares. Each player begins with 16 pieces: one king, one queen, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, and eight pawns.

Board Setup

The board is set up with the white square in the bottom right corner. Each player's queen goes on a square of her color (white queen on white, black queen on black).

Objective

The goal of chess is to checkmate your opponent's king — putting it in a position where it is under attack and cannot escape capture.

Learn More About Basics

Chess Pieces

Pawn

Moves forward one square, or two on its first move. Captures diagonally forward one square.

Knight

Moves in an L-shape: two squares horizontally or vertically, then one square at 90° angle.

Bishop

Moves diagonally any number of squares. Cannot jump over other pieces.

Rook

Moves horizontally or vertically any number of squares. Cannot jump over other pieces.

Queen

Combines powers of rook and bishop. Most powerful piece that can move any number of squares diagonally, horizontally, or vertically.

King

Moves one square in any direction. Cannot move into check. Must be protected at all costs.

Popular Chess Openings

Italian Game

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4

A classical opening that develops pieces quickly toward the center.

Sicilian Defense

1. e4 c5

Black's most popular response to e4, fighting for the center indirectly.

Queen's Gambit

1. d4 d5 2. c4

White offers a pawn to gain control of the center.

Chess Strategy

Control the Center

Pieces in the center control more of the board. Try to place your pawns and pieces to influence the central squares.

King Safety

Castle early to protect your king. Maintain pawn structure in front of your castled king for additional protection.

Develop Pieces

Move your pieces to active positions where they control important squares or attack enemy pieces.

Watch for Tactics

Look for forks, pins, skewers, and discovered attacks that can win material or lead to checkmate.
